Preserving Nature’s Story for Generations
There’s something magnetic about a live edge slab—its flowing grain, organic edges, and defiant contours have a way of drawing us in. We’re fascinated by nature’s story etched in the wood before us, and we can’t help but imagine the giant of the forest from whence it came.
Whether destined to become a grand conference table or a warm kitchen island, live edge furniture effortlessly outshines the mass-produced and synthetic—pieces with no story, no history, and no connection to nature. Plastics?
But this natural grandeur of a finished slab carries an Achilles heel. The same forces that shaped the tree in the wild can, over time, work against it.
No one wants a piece of furniture that twists, cracks, or harbors insects within a few short years. That’s why every craftsman who works with live edge wood faces an essential question: How do we ensure this remarkable piece of nature lasts for generations?
The answer lies in one critical, invisible process:
Kiln-Drying.
In this guide, we’ll explore why kiln-drying is the cornerstone of heirloom-quality live edge slabs—especially the large, statement pieces cherished here in Boise and the Treasure Valley—and how our meticulous process at River Valley Woodworks preserves both beauty and structural integrity for decades to come.
What Are Live Edge Slabs and Why is Drying Essential?
A live edge slab is a full, natural slice of a tree — a piece that retains the original edge and shape of its trunk. It displays the natural flow of the grain, the knots, and the character that mark the tree’s journey through decades of growth and seasons.
But unlike standard lumber, these slabs are thick, wide, and often contain both heartwood and sapwood. That means they shrink unevenly, can hide insects deep within their fibers, and may warp dramatically if dried improperly.
This is why kiln drying becomes essential.

What Is Kiln Drying, and Why Does It Matter?
Kiln-drying is the controlled process of removing moisture from wood using a specialized chamber.
Air drying alone is insufficient; it can take years (usually a year per inch of slab) and still leave wood unstable or insect-ridden. Our Idaho climate—hot, dry summers and cold winters—only increases the risk of case hardening, surface checking, and pest activity.
Proper kiln-drying offers four non-negotiable advantages:
- Moisture consistency from edge to core
- Protection from insects
- Long-term stability in a climate-controlled home
- Confidence for anyone investing in a once-in-a-lifetime piece

The River Valley Woodworks Method
At River Valley Woodworks, we take no shortcuts. Our method combines extended air drying with gentle, high-moisture kiln drying—a schedule engineered to prevent case hardening and protect the slab’s natural integrity.
- Extended Air Drying, Up to 24 Months
We reduce moisture slowly to below 25% while protecting the slabs from Idaho’s intense sun. - Controlled Steam Treatment
Moisture is removed gradually to protect the internal structure. - Lethal Bug Treatment
We heat to 140°F for 24 hours to eliminate insects. - Slow, Even Drying Over 6–14 Weeks
No rushing. No shortcuts. Stability is built slowly. - Stabilization Phase
Six weeks at 100–125°F and 50% humidity bring the moisture safely down to 6–10%. - Final Inspection
Every slab is inspected upon unloading to ensure that it meets our quality standard.
Note: Even though bugs will sometimes survive even the most careful kiln drying process, we have developed our process to combine high killing power and careful drying for maximum wood quality.
Our process is also very sustainable. We burn scrap wood in our wood boiler that heats the kiln, reducing our electricity consumption.
