Old beams from factories and barns make excellent ceiling systems, mantels, timber frames, archways, porch posts, and pergolas. They have the advantage of being dry so they won’t shift and move once they are installed. A little sanding with varnish or a natural look makes a great alternative for structural and aesthetic uses.
We can also place old beams on our band saw mill and take a slice off the outside layer giving the beam a fresher look while still revealing some of the character. We can also use our sawmill to cut beams to the exact dimension you need.
These pictures are examples of reclaimed beams that have been installed with interlocking Mortise and Tenon construction and are fastened with real oak pegs.
